BMW LDC1 with Max Shkinder - 3D Alias Model

In Spring 2020, with the pandemic forcing us into furlough and making our futures very uncertain, I approached my extremely talented friend and colleague Max to work on a collaborative project to keep our portfolios fresh. He told me he'd be happy to guide me through the development of a wacky BMW speedster concept he came up with back in 2019. This was the birth of what would become the BMW LDC1, or Lock-Down Concept 1.

With the UK weather being unprecedently glorious, Max awaiting his first child and various other circumstances, the project ended up being spread over several months, which allowed us to reach a mature proposal without working too many hours each week.

Our focus, from the beginning, was to have fun and forget about all the real-world constraints that make professional car design a lot more frustrating and restrictive. No package, no safety regulations, no aerodynamics or thermodynamics, no physical limitations and more importantly, no engineers and upper management to please!

We took inspiration from the Ferrari SP2 Monza and BMW 328 Hommage with some details from recent BMW concept cars and some of their classics, like the M1 and 3.0 CSL. Our aim was to reignite excitement and purity in BMW's design language while also trying out some cool new shapes and generally having a bit of a blast with our imagination!

Originally, the concept was a Le Mans race car but we eventually steered away from that idea
For the first time in my career, I am sharing a step-by-step evolution of my 3D model

The BMW M-Sport livery was modelled on Alias first then modified by Max during post-production on Photoshop
